Purpose of the Programme

The Competent Safety Officer Course for Mining (COMPSOC) is a basic-level program designed to introduce participants to the fundamental principles of safety management in mining environments. It focuses on understanding and addressing common mining hazards, ensuring compliance with basic industry regulations, and fostering awareness of workplace safety practices. Participants also receive introductory training on Safety Management Systems, equipping them with the foundational skills to support and implement safety protocols effectively. This course serves as a starting point for those new to safety roles in mining, providing a solid foundation for progression to intermediate and advanced levels

Entry Requirements : Grade 10,11 or 12 

 

 

Knowledge Modules

  1. Introduction to Mining Safety Principles

    • Overview of mining operations and safety challenges.

    • Key roles and responsibilities of a Safety Officer.

  2. Understanding Mining Hazards

    • Identification of physical, chemical, and ergonomic hazards.

    • Basics of hazard risk assessment and control measures.

  3. Mining Legislation and Compliance

    • Overview of mining safety laws and regulations.

    • Understanding the Mine Health and Safety Act (MHSA) and other relevant standards.

  4. Fundamentals of Safety Management Systems (SMS)

    • Basic concepts of SMS in mining operations.

    • Introduction to safety policies, procedures, and documentation.
       

Practical Modules

  1. Conducting Hazard Identification and Risk Assessment (HIRA)

    • Hands-on practice in identifying workplace hazards and assessing risks.

    • Developing basic risk mitigation plans.

  2. Incident Reporting and Investigation

    • Practical steps in reporting workplace incidents.

    • Conducting a simple incident investigation and drafting a report.

  3. Workplace Inspections and Audits

    • Performing safety inspections in a simulated mining environment.

    • Identifying non-compliance and recommending corrective actions

The course fee is R8000.00 with an additional registration fee of R350.00. Payable in 2 Treanches â€‹â€‹â€‹â€‹
